The Prevalence and Impact of Drowsy Driving

چکیده

Studies have documented operator drowsiness, sleepiness, or fatigue as causal or contributing factors in aviation, maritime, and trucking accidents. However, estimates of the prevalence of drowsy drivers on the road and of the proportion of motor vehicle crashes that involve drowsy drivers vary widely. This study presents new estimates of the prevalence of drowsy drivers on U.S. roads and of the proportion of crashes that involve a drowsy driver. In a nationally representative telephone survey of U.S. drivers conducted in the spring of 2010, 41.0% of drivers admit to having “fallen asleep or nodded off” while driving at some point in their lives, including 11.0% within the past year and 3.9% in the past month. More than one in four drivers admits to having driven when they were “so sleepy that [they] had a hard time keeping [their] eyes open” within the past month. Examination of data from a nationally-representative sample of crashes that occurred between 1999 and 2008 and involved a passenger vehicle that was towed from the scene shows that 3.9 percent of all of those crashes, 7.7 percent of those that resulted in at least one person being admitted to a hospital, and 3.6 of those that resulted in death involved a driver who was coded as drowsy. However, the attention status of 45% of the drivers in the data was unknown. The statistical technique of multiple imputation was used to take into account additional information about these drivers and the crashes in which they were involved and to estimate the proportion of these drivers who were drowsy. Taking all of these drivers into account, an estimated 7.0% of all crashes in which a passenger vehicle was towed, 13.1% of crashes that resulted in a person being admitted to a hospital, and 16.5% of fatal crashes involved a drowsy driver. © 2010, AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety

The relationship between nurse work schedules, sleep duration, and drowsy driving.

STUDY OBJECTIVES Recent studies have shown that extended shifts worked by hospital staff nurses are associated with significantly higher risk of errors, yet little information is available about the ability to remain alert during the nurses' commutes following the completion of an extended work shift. The purpose of this study is to describe the prevalence of drowsy driving episodes and the rel...

O12: Excessive Daytime Sleepiness, Dozing at the Wheel and Road Safety

It has been documented that nearly 25-30% of automobile collisions are potentially associated with driving fatigue. We have little control over sleep propensity when chronically sleep-deprived or suffer from an underlying sleep insufficiency. Drowsy driving is not only a personal but also a public hazard and commercial drivers with alternate shifts are critically at risk. People on monotonous d...

Short and long sleep duration and risk of drowsy driving and the role of subjective sleep insufficiency.

Experimental sleep restriction increases sleepiness and impairs driving performance. However, it is unclear whether short sleep duration in the general population is associated with drowsy driving. The goal of the present study was to evaluate whether individuals in the general population who obtained sleep of 6h or less are more likely to report drowsy driving, and evaluate the role of perceiv...

Confronting Drowsy Driving: The American Academy of Sleep Medicine Perspective.

ABSTRACT Drowsy driving is a serious public health concern which is often difficult for individual drivers to identify. While it is important for drivers to understand the causes of drowsy driving, there is still insufficient scientific knowledge and public education to prevent drowsy driving. As a result, the AASM is calling upon institutions and policy makers to increase public awareness and ...

Drowsy Driving and Risk Behaviors — 10 States and Puerto Rico, 2011–2012

Findings in published reports have suggested that drowsy driving is a factor each year in as many as 7,500 fatal motor vehicle crashes (approximately 25%) in the United States. CDC previously reported that, in 2009-2010, 4.2% of adult respondents in 19 states and the District of Columbia reported having fallen asleep while driving at least once during the previous 30 days. Adults who reported u...
